"Do you take Insurance?" "Will Insurance cover acupuncture?"

Insurance coverage for acupuncture is, perhaps, one of the most commonly asked questions that I hear.

Many insurance companies will either partially or fully cover the cost of acupuncture treatment – it depends on the company and the policy that you have. It is best to contact your insurance carrier to learn the coverage limitations of your policy. The Classical True Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine Clinic provides you with an invoice listing the standardized diagnostic and treatment codes (called a Super bill) as well as recording the fee that you have paid.

You are responsible for paying all fees at the time of service for each appointment. You are also responsible for checking with your insurance carrier to see if they accept Super bills, and if they do, you can submit your invoice to them so that they may reimburse you for the cost of treatment.

Also, Health Savings Accounts (HSA), Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and other similar programs include acupuncture as a “medically necessary” expense, and we will be happy to provide you a receipt for your records.

Please note that herbal remedies are not typically reimbursed by Insurance companies, nor eligible for HSA or FSA accounts.

The Classical True Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine clinic
is conveniently located in South Denver, Colorado (Centennial), minutes
from Aurora, Castle Rock, Cherry Hills Village, DTC, Denver Tech
Center, Englewood, Greenwood Village, Highlands Ranch, Littleton, Lone
Tree, and Parker, Colorado.

Ear stapling to lose weight

Ear stapling, a more extreme form of auricular acupuncture, has become all the rage for weight loss
in recent years. Practitioners are charging $150+ to staple a patient's
ear—the staple is supposed to cause constant stimulation to an area of

Many people are trying this technique as an alternative to more drastic
weight loss measures, but are they seeing results? Yes and no. The
reality is, ear stapling is no more effective than anything else, in
fact, it isn't any more effective than placebo.

So why do it? Well, most people are doing it because they have tried everything and don't know what else to do.

Classical True Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine does not offer ear stapling
as we do not think that this may be the most effective approach to
understanding the whole system and why each person may hold onto weight
in the manner that he/she does. If ear stapling is something you still
want to try, we can recommend someone who performs ear stapling in a
sterile and clean manner. Please give us a call.

Is there hope to manage your weight?

Yes, acupuncture and herbs can help stimulate digestion, metabolism, and re-balance your systems as a whole to assist you in your efforts to lose those unwanted pounds in a safe, natural, and easy way.

How can Acupuncture N Herbs help?

First, our style of Classical True Acupuncture brings your systems back into a natural homeostatic balance. Because we use the radial pulses in a very specific way, we can more effectively diagnose your core constitutional imbalances that support your weight gain. This will help revive your health and you will feel more energetic and ready to do those healthy things necessary to have a fully healthy life.

Secondly, if needed, our high quality raw Chinese herbs are utilized to stimulate functions that will help you drop pounds. However, unlike the improper use of herbs that have been taking place for weight loss, we customize a formula that will help re-establish your constitutional balance and will not over stimulate you just to drop a few pounds, which ultimately causes potential health problems.

We realize that weight control can be a daunting task and we are here to help make it a manageable endeavor and one that you can achieve without the yo-yo dieting, surgeries and ear staples. Give us a call to see how we can help you.

Styles of Acupuncture

All acupuncture styles are not created equal. So if you’ve had a bad experience in the past, don’t give up on acupuncture or herbs just yet! If you’ve never tried acupuncture, but have been intrigued, keep reading to see what True Acupuncture can treat and what we can do for you.

Alternative Medicine

Our philosophy is to treat you as the unique individual you are, without the use of memorized point scripts and herbal formulas. We all respond to each and every stimulus differently, so our detailed methods ensure that each needle used is exactly what your body needs and each Chinese herbal formula matches your exact disharmonies. This avoids the “pin cushion” effect and shotgun approach since only a few needles are used and your formula is customized for you at the time of treatment!

Be Informed

A good place to begin your journey on this website is the Acupuncture page. We encourage you to read and research before choosing an acupuncturist to help maintain your health or to address specific health needs. So go ahead, look around and read more about how acupuncture works, the Classical True Acupuncture style, how and when we may use Chinese herbs, and what to expect in your treatments with our Board Certified and Licensed Acupuncturists. Making the right choices to take care of your health naturally is a great start!

The Classical True Acupuncture & Chinese Herbal Medicine clinic is conveniently located in South Denver, Colorado (Centennial), minutes from Littleton, Lone Tree, Highlands Ranch, Parker, Castle Rock, Englewood, Cherry Hills Village, Denver Tech Center (DTC), Greenwood Village, and Aurora.

What can acupuncture treat?

The World Health Organization has published a list or conditions they recommend acupuncture for (WHO recommended conditions for acupuncture). As you can see from the list, there are a great many health conditions acupuncture can treat even by the WHO standards.

Acupuncture as primary care

What we have to remember is that acupuncture has been a primary care modality for thousands of years in different parts of the world. (TCM or Traditional Chinese Medicine acupuncture, the most common form of acupuncture used by practitioners today, has not been used for thousands of years as it is a relatively younger form of acupuncture.) People relied on acupuncture to treat every condition, from prevention and health maintenance to acute and chronic disorders. George Soulie de Morant learned True Acupuncture in the early 1900s in China and went on to use it as primary care modality in France. Morant demonstrated that acupuncture was equal to, if not more effective in many areas, than Western Medicine. In fact, for Morant it was capable of treating any functional disorder; where he drew the line with acupuncture was in treating lesions. He believed that other measures were needed when lesions were the cause of health care problems.

Through our research, we have seen acupuncture treat many conditions very easily--conditions that we were told in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) school that acupuncture could not treat or treated poorly. We've seen just the opposite. We've seen acupuncture work amazingly well across all functional conditions and superiorly to any other form of treatment that we know of. This is why we adhere to Morant's teachings and apply Classical True Acupuncture primarily.

Acupuncture Specialties

Throughout our study of True acupuncture we, like all health care practitioners, have become more familiar with certain conditions than others; however, please always remember that True Acupuncture treats the whole person and not the conditions. Therefore, even though we may say we “specialize” in certain areas, that is only to say we have seen more patients with these problems and have had great success in those areas. No matter what condition we treat, the mechanism of treatment is always the same: understand each individual’s unique presentation and bring the whole body into harmony, without just looking to inserting needles based only on the symptoms.

We specialize in treating the individual and the root causes to health problems, which may result in elimination of many symptoms. With that said, here is a list of conditions we have become “more specialized” in:

Acupuncture as preventative medicine

By its nature, acupuncture is, by far, the best preventative medicine that we have found. Certainly exercise, nutrition, and a good attitude towards life are essential in maintaining good health; however, when it comes to medical modalities, nothing we have seen comes close to acupuncture in the prevention of disease and illness. Far too often, people wait until they have one or more of the above conditions before seeking an acupuncturist or they seek one as a last alternative. This needs to be reversed. We can keep you in optimal health and prevent you from suffering if you use acupuncture as a preventative means.

This is the area that True Acupuncture shines more than any other style. Because of the unique pulse diagnosis, we can understand what imbalances may exist even if you do not feel physical symptoms just yet. Balancing your merdians via our pulse analysis keeps you healthy before conditions arise - this proves to be an inexpensive health care approach in the long run. And often, with only one treatment per month and for many, it can be as few as two treatments per year! What other preventative health care can you get for less than $200 per year that actually does something?

We all work hard in life so that we can enjoy our free time and our retirement. True acupuncture can help you enjoy it in good health.

Please give us a call (720-324-7171) to discuss how we may be able to help you and remember, we offer a free initial consultation so you can feel comfortable with your health care decision.

This soup can be made with 1 cup of any type of nut. Common nuts to use are almonds (traditionally, the Chinese use Chinese “almonds,” walnuts, cashews and peanuts.)

What are Chinese Almonds?

Chinese “almonds” are, in fact, apricot seed kernels and look different from the raw almonds we’re used to in American stores. For the Almond Soup, traditionally, 1 cup large Chinese “almonds” + 1/8 cup of small Chinese “almonds” are used. This latter small almond is very aromatic and gives the soup its strong taste, and is a medicinal herb used for cough.

The large Chinese “almonds” are called “Southern (nan) xing ren” and should have skins on them (fresher this way). They are more heart shaped than the raw common almonds we know. These are harder to find and substituting 1 cup of raw common almonds works just as well.

The small Chinese “almonds” are called “Northern (bei) xing ren” and typically do not have the skin on and are very aromatic; if there is no aroma, they are no longer fresh. These are easily found in Asian stores or from your Acupuncturist/Herbalist. These MUST be included to give the soup its distinct taste and therapeutic benefits!

Basic recipe:

½ cup uncooked rice (white or brown long grain rice)

water

1 cup nuts:

Chinese “almonds”

2 types of almonds are used (see below)

good for cough

moistening the lungs

and to beautify the skin

or substitute almonds with on of the following:

Walnuts

lightly toasted to bring out flavor

good to tonify yang

helps sharpen the mind!

Pecans

lightly toasted

I like combining walnuts and pecans

Cashews

lightly toasted

Sugar – amount depends on your preference.

Traditionally, rock sugar is used, which can be found in Asian stores.

If I don’t have rock sugar, I make a 1:1 sugar syrup (sugar to water ratio).

You may try substituting the sugar with brown sugar, honey, or a similar sweetener.

Directions

Soak rice in enough cold water to cover rice (approximately 6 oz) overnight [I’ve soaked the rice for only a few hours before and it works fine.]

Use blender to liquefy rice & water (that the rice was soaked in) until very smooth.

Add nuts (if using Chinese “almonds,” add both kinds together) and more water (about 1 cup at this point to prevent the mixture from getting to thick).

Blend until smooth – check how smooth the mixture is by feeling how “gritty” or smooth the liquid feels between your fingers. (Of course, this step is done with the blender off!)

While continuing to blend, add enough cold water to make approximately 4 cups.

Bring 1½ - 2½ quarts of water (depending on how thin you want the soup – less water, more cream soup-like; more water, more “nut milk-like”) to a boil.

On med heat, slowly pour blended nut mixture into boiling water while stirring constantly (this will help to avoid lumps). Continue to stir constantly and cook for a few minutes until re-boiled and smooth. Be careful here – the soup can easily stick and cause the bottom of the pot to burn.

Sweeten the soup until desired taste.

If soup thickens too much, add hot water until desired thickness.

Serve warm – and refrigerate left over.

Additional Suggestions

As I pass along this recipe, I’ve gotten feedback on additions and modifications on this soup. Some of these include:

Almond Soup: adding cinnamon or black pepper

Walnut Soup: adding cinnamon

Please feel free to post your comments and suggestions, thanks!

Moxibustion

Moxibustion involves burning dried herbs over specific areas or points of the body. The herb commonly used is called mugwort (artemesia vulgaris) – or a blend of mugwort and other herbs—and is referred to as “moxa.” Moxa comes in many forms: moxa ‘punk’ or loose moxa, sticks of varying sizes, small grains, and many others, and can be burned indirectly over or directly on the body. Moxa’s strong warming quality warms the qi (energy) and blood and improves circulation, especially in disorders characterized by cold, such as menstrual disorders, digestive complaints, and arthritic pain.

Cupping

Cupping is highly beneficial in releasing musculoskeletal tension and pain (which correlates to “stagnation” in the meridian pathways in Oriental Medicine) and removing “pathogens” to alleviate symptoms of the common cold, flu, and other respiratory disorders, amongst other benefits. A vacuum is created by heating the air within a specialized glass cup that is then placed flush against the patient's skin. As the air cools in the cup, a vacuum forms that pulls the skin and underlying fascia into the opening of the cup, stimulating the acupressure effect. There are numerous cupping techniques, and while it is a virtually painless procedure, the results may appear a bit unsightly as bruising is common due to the fact that blood is brought out of the vessels—no, bleeding does not occur.

Gua sha

Gua sha, also called “scraping therapy,” is a technique that involves repeated pressurized strokes over pre-oiled skin with a smooth-edged instrument such as a ceramic Chinese soup spoon, a well worn coin, a polished piece of water buffalo horn, or a piece of jade. With firm pressure, the smooth edge is “scraped” on the surface of the skin along meridian pathways. Similar to the cupping method, this results in the appearance of small red petechiae, referred to as ‘sha.’ This practice removes blood stagnation and promotes circulation and metabolic processes. The marks on the skin may be slightly tender, but are not painful and, in fact, the patient experiences immediate relief from symptoms such as pain, stiffness, cough, and fever.

Electro-Acupuncture (E-Stim)

Electro-acupuncture, also called e-stim or electrical stimulation, is used to provide greater stimulation of an acupuncture point. According to Acupuncture Today, a trade journal for acupuncturists:

Electroacupuncture is quite similar to traditional acupuncture in that the same points are stimulated during treatment. As with traditional acupuncture, needles are inserted on specific points along the body. The needles are then attached to a device that generates continuous electric pulses using small clips. These devices are used to adjust the frequency and intensity of the impulse being delivered, depending on the condition being treated. Electroacupuncture uses two needles at time so that the impulses can pass from one needle to the other. Several pairs of needles can be stimulated simultaneously, usually for no more than 30 minutes at a time." (Acupuncture Today: Electroacupuncture, Feb. 1, 2004)

The sensation felt is a mild tapping, tingling, or buzzing where the needle is inserted, and electro-acupuncture is considered to be especially useful for conditions in which there is an accumulation of qi, such as in chronic pain syndromes, or in cases where the qi is difficult to stimulate.

Philosophy on Alternative Medicine

Our philosophy is to treat you as the unique individual you are, without the use of memorized point scripts and herbal formulas. We all respond to each and every stimulus differently, so our detailed methods ensure that each needle used is exactly what your body needs and each Chinese herbal formula matches your exact disharmonies. This avoids the “pin cushion” effect and shotgun approach since only a few needles are used and your formula is customized for you at the time of treatment!

Be Informed

Please explore our website to learn more about how our style of acupuncture and herbs can help you. A good place to begin your journey on this website is the Acupuncture page. We encourage you to read and research before choosing an acupuncturist to help maintain your health or to address specific health needs.
