In fact, China uses acupuncture as the primary treatment for pain, and this has carried over to the United States where many acupuncturists specialize in treating pain. In fact, in the state of Colorado, chiropractors need only 100 hours of education and MDs have no minimum number of required training hours, you will notice that many of the under-trained practitioners specialize in pain. The reason lies in the fact that they perform simple protocols and local acupuncture for pain treatment, without the understanding of True Acupuncture.
Pain Management With Acupuncture
What one needs to realize is that most pain management with acupuncture relies simply on local needling or needling of distal tender areas based on protocols, and rarely does the practitioner spend the necessary time to locate a true acupuncture point which gives greater results that last much longer. Furthermore, without the proper understanding of the radial pulses, permanent lasting results is rarely obtained.

The Tendinomuscular meridians
These are considered the most “superficial” of all meridians of acupuncture. They are much broader than the regular meridians and they control the tendons, muscles, and skin; however, that is not to mean that the deeper meridians do not have a stronger influence on these same systems.
Using the Tendinomuscular meridian to treat pain
This is a highly effective and easy method to treat the “branch” symptoms of pain, as most pain is due to the tendinomuscular “system;” therefore, addressing this meridian directly usually provides very quick relief from pain. It must be noted that this is NOT a “root” treatment. This treatment is geared at treating the branch (symptoms) only; therefore, this method should be applied AFTER needling for the root condition.
The technique is very simple in and of itself; however, if it is not combined with a root treatment the lasting effects will be greatly reduced. The process is to simply needle the jing-well point of the affected tendinomuscular meridian. Then the yuan-source point and convergent point of the affected meridian are needled. The practitioner must know whether to tonify or sedate these points based on the nature of the condition and root treatment being applied.

. . . with Acupuncture
We must differentiate pain management from pain relief when dealing with acupuncture.
Relief of pain
Acupuncture is probably the most effective treatment method for pain relief. It can permanently relieve the pain of conditions that are functional in nature. What is meant by this is, acupuncture can usually treat most occurrences of pain unless they are due to lesions, such as cancer. At such a stage of progression acupuncture must be used to manage pain.
Management of pain
First, we must realize that acupuncture is a preventative medicine. Even though most use it to treat or “cure” illness, by its very nature it is utilized best to keep the “systems” functioning properly before they develop into pathology; however, most patients do not seek acupuncture as preventative care. . . .

Acupuncture, without a doubt, is the most advanced pain management therapy in the world and it is the oldest. It is used throughout the world for treating pain with great success. In fact, because it is so successful at eliminating pain, it has become thought of as being only able to treat pain. While this is most definitely not true, acupuncture is truly amazing at eliminating pain very quickly.
If you have never had acupuncture for the treatment of pain you will be shocked at the speed in which it eliminates pain. In most cases pain can be treated within minutes, and many of these cases will only need one treatment! No dependency on drugs, no continual “therapies” to help your “structure”, etc. . . continue on to the advanced pain management page . . .
Dr. Richard Tan has become very famous for his acupuncture balance method for treating pain. The method is very simple. In fact he often says it’s so simple that it is acupuncture 1-2-3. Just follow three easy steps and you are done.
Originally the method was directed at pain only; however, over the years Dr. Tan has modified the system for internal medicine. I can’t say I’m impressed with his new found modifications for internal medicine. Actually, I think most of them are founded on far out theories that have no clinical reality and do not stand up to scrutiny. Nonetheless, he is a major lecturer in the acupuncture community and many apply his techniques.

Pain management refers, obviously, to the management of pain, whereas pain relief refers to the elimination of pain. Acupuncture pain management is generally applied in pathologies that have progressed to a state of a lesion and the most that can be hoped for from acupuncture is the reduction and management of pain to reduce or eliminate the need for pain medications.
Acupuncture, although it may be the oldest, is undoubtedly the most advanced pain management system there is. In progressive cases that may require surgery or other drastic extremes, acupuncture is still the most effective treatment to reduce and/or eliminate pain quickly and easily.
The benefits of using acupuncture for pain are numerous:
- Cost effective
- Immediate pain relief and/or reduction
- Natural and drug free
- Helps restore general health
- Treats the person as a whole and not just the symptoms

George Soulie de Morant describes on one page the concept of treating pain with acupuncture. “The Great Puncture” summarizes many of the modern ideas of acupuncture treatment for pain. What is interesting to note is, most of these “modern scholars” claim that they discovered this information. One cannot understand such a claim from practitioners who claim to be well read. Such theories have been discussed by great acupuncturist for over a 1,000 years and Morant clearly describes the concepts in his book, “Chinese Acupuncture.”
